2013 Halloween Contest by Chalaya 2013 Halloween Contest by Chalaya
*I DID NOT DRAW THIS. I COLORED IT IN.*
*DO NOT USE THIS DEVIATION IN ANY WAY OR TAKE IT AND PUT IT ON ANY OTHER WEBSITE*

My entry for the %CutiePieWonderland Halloween coloring contest. I'll skip the usual scanner rant. Of course it screwed up the colors. I'm pretty happy with my coloring on the actual lineart, but I detest the background I drew for it. It's too busy and I think it takes away from Jade's beautiful lines. In any case, this sexy little vampire was so much fun to color! It really sets the Halloween mood! :)

Fabulous lineart by :iconjadedragonne:
Original drawing: jadedragonne.deviantart.com/ar…
Colored for the :iconcutiepiewonderland: contest

Materials:
Lineart colored with Prismacolor colored pencils
Background made with Crayola and Prismacolor markers
Mist created with white Faber Castell pastel pencil

yes! i try because i dont wan to be influenced by other entries at all, but when its a friends work and im itching to give my 2 ents i can sometimes give in to that and also the urge to check out the competition which never relly ends well and i often leave with a feeling of intimidation but then i can turn it into drive to try better myself! Ah! it can be hard sometimes to achieve that last step!

Thank you so much! I really tried hard to make the lighting work here by adding deep shadows. I wanted it to look like it was really night time with the muted tones. I'm so glad you like the skin here. I was really proud of it, and of the eyes too. I took some coloring tips from *JadeDragonne's colorings because she's so good with lighting! Thanks again for the awesome comment! :)

Bloomin 'eck Chalaya!!! You just keep producing amazing stuff! However are we going to keep up with you?!
I totally disagree with you about the background - it's fabulous!  ( We certainly must be on the same wavelength, I've thought about doing one - you've made it hard now though lol) Your background is perfect and looks like it was already part of the line art. The tree and fence are particularly stunning. The mist is a great touch too.
Her skin tone is perfect and I love the way you have achieved a gaunt haunting look to her face and bone structure. The hair is so shiny and the lighting effect all over her is amazing.
I could just go on and on  Amazing!!!!

Aw, thank you so much! I just do what I do. :) I'd love to see what you would do with this! You have an incredible style and I think you'd do a splendid job! I do hope you're going to enter if you have time. :) I'm so glad you like this one. All the great feedback has really helped me not hate the background so much, that's for sure. I'm so glad you noticed the skin tone as well. I was totally going for a hollow, pale look as befits a classic vampire. French greys topped off with a slight layer of peach is how I did her skin. French grey has some warmth to it, so it can pass for a really pale skin tone if it's worked the right way. I learned that lighting effect from the lovely Jade herself. She's a master when it comes to that creepy lighting! Thanks so much for the great feedback. You made my day! :)

Wow amazing! I love how you add your own details and personality in there. Truly amazing. That extended background of yours is awesome. I love it. You really played with the light and shadows on this drawing and I love how liquid the blood seems by its shine. Her hair as well is so shiny and perfect. Love the bloody eyes as well. Again, that background, especially the moon is stunning. Very awesome coloring!

Thank you! I really appreciate it. I wasn't sure of the background, but I'm kind of warming up to it now. I do really like the mist effects and I really adore the way the vampire came out. I'm so thrilled you like the hair, and especially the eyes. Halloween pictures are so much fun because you can play with things like hair, eyes and skin to make them look really creepy. Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback! I really appreciate it! And thanks for the fave as well. :)

Whenever I open up any of your art pieces, there's always one thing I can expect -- self doubt! You always seem to doubt your abilities and are unsure about at least one thing you've done in your work. I can safely say, there's nothing wrong with this piece. Since you chose to pick out the background as something you don't like about what you've done, I'll tackle that first.

The background is.... get ready for it..... incredible! I look at it and it is the perfect marriage between the lines drawn by *JadeDragonne and your colours. It is fitting. I particularly like the menacing tree with its crisp black lines. The fencing is great as well. The way in which you've filled in the area surrounding the lines is incredible. I like that you've made a full graveyard and I even appreciate how you've created different shapes for the tombstones. The moon is also a great touch. You've previously drawn one (or two?) for other pieces and you definitely know how to make it glow. It's always subtle and soft. The colours on the vampire are superb. I look at the original lines and I see how simple they are. They're crisp, clean. What I'm impressed by is how you've laid down not only colours, but textures. You gave the bodice a velvety finish and you even added further texture by adding in the curling black lines along the top and bottom. I like that it looks like real fabric. It's very reminiscent of the kinds of textures on vampire costumes found around Halloween time. Her stockings have a nice texture as well. I like that they've got grey tones to them. Also, the pairing of the crimson with the purple was a smart decision on your part. I really like the way those colours compliment each other. Even more impressive than the colours of her outfit are those placed on her face and hair. The make-up you've given her is flawless. That's nothing in comparison to those eyes though. They have such depth to them. I love all the red tones you've put into them. I also have to compliment you on her hair. You could've given her straight-up black hair but you chose to lay down some purple into it. Not only does it tie into her outfit but it also gives some nice variety to the hair. Bravo! Another area I have to compliment you on are the pumpkin and the skull. The colour is fairly standard but what makes them stand out are the glowing effect you've given them. The pumpkin genuinely looks like it has a candle lighting it up from the inside. The same goes for the skull. I really like that you chose to make it glow. Oh yeah, and that mist is pretty badass. Nice touch.

Overall, you've done an incredible job here. The tone of it is fantastic and I think you should be proud of these colours. I wish you luck in the contest. I hope you win!

You know me well by now. I do tend to beat myself up quite a bit when it comes to my art. I guess it's because with every piece I do, I always think I could have done better. It's just something about my confidence level, especially now when my emotions tend to get the better of me more often than not. I am so relieved that you do like the background though. I know that you're always honest and if you say it looks good, then I believe you. I do enjoy coloring Jade's lines and I think it's so much fun because you can do so much with them. Thanks so much for your compliments on the tree and fence. Those are two things that I was afraid were too busy. The tombstones I rushed on. I just kind of scribbled on some grey marker and then intentionally covered them with the mist b/c I really didn't like how they looked afterwards. It ended up being pretty cool though, because you can still tell they're there. It created the graveyard atmosphere without actually seeing too much of the poorly rendered tombstones. I was pretty happy with the moon actually. I think it came out nicely. I could have done better, but all in all it looks good. One thing I was very happy with was my coloring of the actual lineart. I was most careful with that and I took a lot of time considering that pattern on her bodice. I was trying to mimic lace. That didn't really take, but it still looks nice. :) Thanks for noticing the color combo of purples and reds. I love those colors together. I hoped it wasn't too cliche' for a vampire, but then again, you can never go wrong with deep, rich colors on a vamp! I'm also glad you like the eyes and hair! I knew I wanted to do red eyes and I tried to tie the makeup in to both the red and purple tones of the outfit. I think eyes make a lot of impact so I always try to make them look their best. The purple in the hair matching the outfit was a happy accident. I colored the hair before I decided what color I was going to make the clothing and it just so happened that they complimented each other. Love when that happens! As far as the pumpkin and skull are concerned, I'm pleased with them. I was really trying hard to make the lighting accurate here, and the pumpkin turned out nicely as far as that was concerned. I added dark greys to the orange in order to mute it a bit and that worked well. The skull could have been better. I don't think I added enough shadow, but it is what it is. I don't color skulls that often so I won't kill myself over that, lol!

I'm so glad you like this, and as always, I really appreciate the wonderful feedback! I don't know if I'll win. There's still a lot of October left for someone to swoop in and trounce me. XD In any case, it was fun. By the way, I have faved one of your new ones and I'm going to comment on it very soon. Going out of town again this weekend so, it'll be first priority when I get back. Thanks again! :)

As artists, there's always going to be something we think we could have done better. However, after a certain point we need to just let it go and be proud of the fact that we were even able to complete a piece. When it comes to the scenery, I think you should cut yourself some slack. Backgrounds aren't easy and I pretty much don't do them at all. It takes a lot of skill and talent to do what you do. The way I look at it, if you're not happy with the tombstones... at least you've got a background to begin with! The colours and the colour combination you went with works. Yeah, it can be a little cliché but it works with the lineart. This vampire is more traditional in her appearance so it wouldn't make sense to plop some neon colours onto her. You could have make her dress in black so I applaud you for going with actual colours instead. Everything else is just spectacular, I'm always impressed with your textures and colour combinations. You're a natural and I can always tell you put so much effort into laying down those colours.

Like I said... good luck on the contest!! :)

Well, thank you! Your feedback always gives me some confidence where I'm lacking. I'll try to cut myself some slack on this one. I think I'm more disappointed in the fact that I decided to use markers for the background. I kind of cheated with that because I knew that the markers would take a fraction of the time it would take for me to do it all in pencil. I always regret rushing, so I don't know why I still do it. But in any case, it really didn't turn out half-bad. I'm glad you like the colors I chose for her outfit, even if it is cliche'. I actually thought about going black, but you know me and color. I'm kind of addicted, lol! Thanks again for the awesome feedback. It really does make me feel better about the work I do. :)

I don't see you using markers as cheating. I think you're allowed to use whatever tools you want and if certain ones enable you to skip a step or finish a piece sooner then I don't see anything wrong with that. Overall, try not to be so hard on yourself. This piece is fabulous. Also, I don't think this piece would have been as effective if you hadn't decided to use colour for her outfit. If she'd been in all black it wouldn't have worked as well. After all, you wouldn't have been able to get the same texture.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. I guess I'd feel differently about it if I hadn't rushed. I see all the little flaws that wouldn't have been there if I had taken my time. It's just that backgrounds are so.....boring! I had to practically force myself not to rush when I was coloring your lineart. It's a simple background but that's a lot of space to cover when a pencil tip. I knew I wouldn't have gotten the look I was going for if I had started to rush and scribble. I used a standard size paper to print the lines on, and when you're working with small, slow circular strokes that's a lot of space. It took me over an hour. But I'm always so much happier when I do it that way because I feel like I didn't cheat myself. Anyway, I'll try not to be hard on myself for taking shortcuts now and then. As long as I do my best I'm usually pretty satisfied because there aren't any regrets. I'm glad I used the color I did for her suit as well. Black would have been so flat and with the already dark atmosphere, the red made her pop a bit. Overall I'm happy with her. :)

Backgrounds are, to some degree, boring. I'm sure there are plenty of people who relish the chance to embellish the background but I'm not one of those people. For one thing, it takes a lot of creativity to envision something for the background of a piece and most of what I draw doesn't really inspire much in the way of a background. I'm always impressed with what you're able to do though because I see a lot of talent and creativity in the kinds of backgrounds you come up with.

I really wish I had more patience with backgrounds. I guess it takes practice as well. I'm sure there are some who really enjoy creating a scene. I like the end result, I just don't like doing the work, lol! But sometimes, I feel like my pieces would be incomplete without a background. Like the mermaid. I didn't just want her floating around in negative space. But doing that background was so tedious. I always find that I tend to loose motivation while doing a background. It seems like there is no end in sight. I need to start working on it first, when my drive is at it's best. Then I'll still have the subject to look forward too.

Her dark and shiny hairs, added to her blood red eyes give her a mysterious and spooky look. I also love the details you added on her outfit, it make it very sophisticated.

Thank you so much! I actually learned most of that lighting effect from you. :) You are a big inspiration for me in my coloring. You do so well with using yellows to create light and blues and greys to create shadow. I'm so glad you like this one. I am happy with my coloring on your lineart, but I don't think I did great on the background. It was fun in any case! I love coloring your dark cuties. They are so dynamic and one can do so much with the lighting and creepy effects. I'm glad you like the pattern on her outfit. I thought that would be something different and a nice touch.
